Well, in the Sixties all sorts of rebellious behaviour was going on and I guess that John either experienced some of it or was witness to it, hence this painting. But as a piece of artwork it adds to his nude period.

The first 'Old Tree' painting 1960, was created by John after he moved to Hereford from the Midlands in 1959. Closer to family and to more familiar ground. There he acquired a teaching post at the local Hereford College of Art for higher education. He was instrumental in developing a traditional curriculum which culminated in the Art Division achieving an Academy Status as it had in its past.
