At aged 67 I retired from work and took up photography, joining Llanrwst Camera Club in North Wales, in 2008-2009. I began developing my photography skills across a range of disciplines, from landscapes to studio work, along with understanding how to work with digital formats and preparing files for print. Using these skills I have worked over the last 5 years on the collection of John Horwill’s artwork – photographing originals, restoring some of John’s photographs of his artwork in progress and preparing prints for purchase. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being able to catalogue John’s work and building a portfolio that spans a large part of his lifetime. John and I were together for 12 years before his death in 1997.
While attending Camera Club in 2013-2014 I was asked to create an Audio/Visual (AV) presentation using my own photography. To make an AV one uses music / sound or voice to accompany visuals. I used this idea to create a ‘life story’ of John through his artwork, using visuals from the collection I had produced. On showing this creation to friends I was contacted by Jon and Jan Rollason, who stated they had office space available and would I be interested in using it to create a gallery to showcase John’s work. This offer was like the light at the end of the tunnel – giving me hope to be able to create my own gallery, rather than just exhibiting in other galleries.
The office space location was ideal, on Ancaster Square in Llanrwst, through the old ‘Steam Packet Entry’.
During 2014 and 2015 I have been busy setting up a gallery and it gave me a great sense of joy and accomplishment to see John Horwill’s work on public display. You can view his artwork on this website, www.johnhorwill.com / or .co.uk which I have been busy creating alongside the physical gallery.
Prints and Originals are available to purchase.
